4 Tips on Safely Packing and Transporting Your Sofa
If you are moving house and intend to shift your current sofa to your new home, you will need to pack your sofa and transport it to your new home in a way that does not damage the sofa. Given the weight and size of the sofa, this is not an easy task to do. To help you, here are 4 tips on safely packing and transporting your sofa.
Use the right materials
Using the appropriate packing materials will go a long way in ensuring that your sofa gets to its destination safely. This will be dependent on the type of sofa you have.
If your sofa is using fabric, the recommended packing materials are couch covers or packing blankets to wrap the furniture, microfoam, paper pads, tape and shrink wrap.
For leather sofas, paper padding or furniture blankets, tape and shrink wrap are the appropriate materials.
Wrap the sofa securely
Once you have gotten the right materials, it is also crucial that you wrap your sofa securely so as to prevent damage. The way you secure the sofa will again depend on the type of sofa you have.
First, wrap packing blankets around your sofa and tape them together to secure the blankets followed by wrapping with microfoam and taping once more.
Next, wrap with paper pads and again tape it all together. Lastly, shrink wrap everything.
Do not shrink wrap the sofa directly as it may cause condensation and damage your fabric.
Extra care is needed as leather sofas are more prone to weather damage.
Wrap your leather sofa including the legs using furniture blankets and secure them using furniture pads and tape. Do take note not to let the tape touch the leather to avoid damage.
Next, shrink wrap everything. Do this ONLY after you have wrapped the leather sofa with furniture pads. Remember not to shrink wrap the sofa directly as it may cause condensation which can damage the leather.
Do not bend your back when loading onto the truck
Loading onto the truck has to be done carefully as damage to your sofa or injury to oneself can occur easily. Take note of the following to avoid damage or injury.
As sofas are heavy, improper lifting can cause serious injury to oneself. Ask a friend for help. Start by lifting one corner slightly followed by your friend lifting the opposite side. Remember to maintain a straight back and bend your knees when lifting.
Do not drag the sofa across the floor. Doing so can cause your sofa to get scuffed and dirty and your floor might get affected as well.
When loading onto a truck, lower the sofa by bending your knees and not your back. It is also advisable to place the sofa towards the back of the truck.
Get the right sized vehicle for the transportation
There is no fixed size for sofas. Some are smaller while others are much bigger. You will need to book a vehicle that can accomodate your sofa well.
If you book a vehicle that is too small for your sofa, it will delay your transportation plans since you will need to book another vehicle and you might need to compensate the driver who has already arrived for the trip made to your location.
On the other hand, a vehicle that is too big will result in you paying more when you could have booked a smaller vehicle and paid less.
To identify the correct vehicle size for your needs, first determine the dimensions of your sofa. Then, check the moving company’s website and find the appropriate vehicle size for your sofa based on the maximum dimensions and weight allowed for each type of vehicle they have.
It is important to get the right delivery service in Singapore as it will ensure that your items are secured properly during the move to prevent damage. The driver can also provide assistance in helping you to load the sofa into the vehicle safely.
If you do not wish to risk any injury to yourself or damage to your sofa, you can always hire a van with a driver for a on-demand delivery service with GetVan Goods to deliver your sofa to your new home in the shortest time possible.
